1 · Package document set
Every submittal package includes these, in this order.
- Cover sheet — project, submittal number, spec section(s), date, and the submitting company
- Transmittal — item list keyed to the schedule, with the reviewer/GC and the type (partial or full)
- Table of contents / section dividers so the reviewer can navigate
- Product data — manufacturer cut sheets marked to the exact model, options, and finish being furnished (strike what doesn't apply)
- Shop drawings for anything fabricated or custom, matched to the drawings and schedules
- Samples or physical mock-ups where the specification requires visual approval
- Certifications & test reports the spec calls up (listings, ratings, compliance letters)
- O&M data and warranties where required at this stage
- Substitution request forms for any product not on the approved-manufacturer list
2 · Concrete scope — by spec section
Pull a submittal for each section in your scope; confirm the spec's Part 1 list.
- Mix designs per ACI 301: one for each specified class (footings, slabs, walls, site), showing design strength, cement type, SCMs (fly ash, slag), aggregate gradation, air content, slump, w/cm ratio, and admixture dosages
- Strength backup: trial batch data or standard-deviation history from the producing plant
- Reinforcing steel shop drawings: bar sizes, bends, spacing, laps, and support details per the structural drawings and ACI 315, with bar lists for fabrication
- Product data: admixtures, curing compound (and its compatibility with specified flooring), evaporation retarder, bonding agents
- Vapor retarder class and thickness under slabs on grade
- Joint materials: fillers, sealants, dowels or load-transfer devices
- Where specified: formwork design, embed and anchor bolt layouts, and flatness/levelness (FF/FL) plan
3 · Before you submit — common rejection reasons to rule out
Reviewers flag these first. Verify each is not an issue before you send.
- Mix w/cm ratio above the specified maximum for the exposure class, or missing air content where freeze-thaw exposure applies
- No strength backup data for the proposed mix
- Rebar drawings with laps, hooks, or cover that deviate from the structural typical details
- Curing compound incompatible with specified floor finishes
- Fly ash or slag percentages beyond spec limits for schedule-critical pours
- Vapor retarder below the specified class, or omitted entirely
