What belongs in a sprinkler submittal package
Sprinkler work is delegated design on most jobs: the engineer specifies criteria, and your NICET-certified designer produces the working drawings. The package includes:
- Shop drawings: piping layout, pipe sizes, head locations, hanger and seismic bracing details per NFPA 13
- Hydraulic calculations tied to the remote area(s) shown on the drawings, with the water supply data (flow test) referenced
- Cut sheets for every component: sprinkler heads by K-factor and temperature rating, valves, switches, backflow preventer, fire department connection
- Material listings — everything must be UL listed / FM approved for the service
- Designer's NICET certification when the spec requires it
What belongs in a fire alarm submittal package
Fire alarm submittals get reviewed against NFPA 72 and the local code, and they must be complete to be reviewable:
- Device cut sheets: panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, modules — all with listing data
- Floor plans showing device locations, candela ratings, and audibility coverage
- Riser diagram with circuit types (Class A/B, SLC, NAC) identified
- Battery calculations for standby and alarm loads, and NAC voltage-drop calculations
- Matrix of operations (sequence of operations) — what each input does to each output
- Interface details: elevator recall, door holders, duct detectors, sprinkler monitoring
The review round-trip — including the AHJ
Fire protection is the trade where the review chain is longest: GC, fire protection engineer, the AHJ (fire marshal or building department), and on insured properties FM Global or the owner's carrier. AHJ review is often sequential, after the design team, and can add two to six weeks. Nothing gets fabricated or installed before the stamped, AHJ-approved set is on site — installing off an unapproved set risks tearing out pipe. Plan the schedule around that reality and submit these packages first, not last.
Common rejection reasons on fire protection submittals
The recurring failures:
- Hydraulic calcs based on an outdated or missing flow test
- Remote area selection the reviewer disagrees with, or density below the specified hazard classification
- Missing seismic bracing calculations where required
- Battery calcs that omit the derating factor or don't match the final device count
- Candela ratings or spacing that fail ADA/NFPA 72 coverage in specific rooms
- Non-listed components, or heads mixed from multiple manufacturers where the spec forbids it
